Instagrammable Destinations to Add to Your Bucket List

Did you know that 2/5th’s of millennials actually choose their holiday destinations based on how ‘Instagrammable’ they are? I came across a survey that was conducted by Schofields Insurance about this topic and I thought the results were pretty surprising!

The insurance company surveyed over 1,000 people between the ages of 18 and 33. They simply asked what is their number one motivator for choosing a holiday destination. The concern of how Instagrammable the destination is was the number one response. What shocked me was that people are willing to choose a city based upon how many great photos they can take; rather than immersing themselves in the culture.

These are the results of the top 5 answers:
  • How Instagrammable the destination is: 40.1%
  • Cost and availability of alcohol: 24%
  • Personal development: 22.6%
  • Chances to experience local cuisine: 9.4%
  • Opportunities for sightseeing: 3.9%

Do these numbers surprise you? It doesn’t phase me that wanting to visit a picture-perfect place is a common factor, what shocks me is that people prioritize that over sightseeing opportunities or wanting a cultural experience. I feel like since I’ve been in Asia over the past year, I’ve been absorbed in learning and living their culture. It’d be weird to visit and not take part in all of that.

To keep this post light-hearted and fun, I went on Twitter and asked you all to share your top Instagrammable destinations with me. There were so many replies with beautiful photos, it was hard to pick my favorites!

Sintra, Portugal

Andrea Peacock shared photos from Portugal with me and this one from Sintra caught my eye the most. I’ve never heard of the town, but it’s giving me all the fairytale feels!

Marrakech, Morocco

Claudia Montano recommends Marrakech and I can definitely see why. This is the inside of a local spa, but you can find stunning architecture like this all over the town. Especially if you book your accommodation at a riad.

Lake Louise, Canada

Matt and Ally from Borderline Backpackers always have the best Instagram photos to share. This one from Lake Louise, Canada makes me not even care that the freezing water could probably kill me if I jumped in!

Limone sul Garda, Italy

Summer Rylander also has a feed of jaw-dropping Instagrammable destinations. It was hard to pick just one, but this photo from Italy is really getting me exciting for my trip through Europe next year. I really love towns next to the sea!

Budva, Montenegro

Milly shared with me this photo from Montenegro and I had to do a double-take because it almost looks like a mini-Positano, am I wrong?! This area is still off the radar for many, so make sure you take a trip before the crowds move in!

These are only a tiny, tiny fraction of all the Instagrammable destinations there are in the world. I’d love to hear your top places, share them with me in the comments!
